COLUMBUS, Ohio (WTVN) -- Ohioans would be able to renew their drivers license online under a new bill. Sen. Eric Kearney (D-Cincinnati) says several other states like Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Nebraska, Michigan, and South Dakota already allow it.
"Iowa saved $1.2 million a year by doing this," Kearney said.
Senate Bill 204 to allow Ohioans to renew their driver’s licenses online every other renewal period. Currently, Ohioans must renew their driver’s license every four years in person at a local BMV office.
Ohioans will be able to complete the renewal form and pay any associated fees online. The vision and photograph requirements will be exempt from the online renewal option. Kearney says you'll need to be over the age of 21 to use the system.
The Cincinnati Democrat didn't know what the start-up costs would be, but noted that Iowa paid for it with the savings.
So far, Kearney only has a couple of fellow Democrats on board with the plan.
