COLUMBUS, Ohio (WTVN) -- Tourism in Ohio is getting a new marketing campaign and strategy later this year.

It's a two-pronged approach, according to TourismOhio director Mary Cusick. She says one thing they have to do is get Ohioans interested in attractions already here.

"If you want to go to a hip urban neighborhood and a craft brewery and then you want to visit an attraction like the amusement parks we're so well known for or our very own state parks, Ohioans, as we experience those things, we can promote Ohio better to our friends and family," Cusick said.

Recommendations are the most effective tool in attracting visitors.

"We also want to come up with a plan so that we have a strong enough message to take it outside our state and encourage people to come to Ohio," she said.

Different ideas were discussed during a day-long conference in Columbus that brought together more than 100 tourism industry leaders, legislators, and marketers. They'll work on how to best market the state.

The tourism industry kicks in about $38 billion to the state and supports 405,000 jobs. Overnight guests generate about three times the revenue to Ohio that day-trippers do.
