MTV Awards hailed on

MTV debuted the MTV Movie & TV Awards last night. Hosted by Adam Devine, the live telecast held at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles also featured music performances from Noah Cyrus, Big Sean and a group number of “Hey Ma” by J Balvin, Camila Cabello and Pitbull.

Formerly known as the MTV Movie Awards, TV shows were newly eligible for Golden Popcorn trophies at this year’s ceremony. MTV also broke down gender barriers in its new format, with men and women competing together in the acting categories.

Several new categories were also added this year: Best American Story, for the program or film that “showcases America at its best”; Best Fight Against the System, which celebrates underdog efforts and social justice; Top Trending Moment; and Best Musical Moment.

The horror/comedy hit Get Out led all nominees with six bids, including Movie of the Year. Beauty and the Beast and the Netflix series Stranger Things had four nominations each.

The cast of the Fast and Furious franchise received the Generation Award, which Vin Diesel and his "family" accepted. The show also featured sneak peeks of anticipated films including Transformers: The Last Knight and Spider-Man: Homecoming.

Some of the highlights from the red carpet, pre-show and awards show itself:

It was raining on and off during the pre-show and red carpet, but the stars and attendees pushed through. However, it started getting really bad when it started hailing. It eventually got so bad that MTV had to move some of the event inside. Some photos and videos surfaced on social media of just how bad it was, with even some of the red carpet walkers having to run for cover. The carpet wasn’t totally ruined by a little rain, though – the pre-show festival carried on, with All Time Low taking the stage in the middle of the storm to entertain the crowd.Adam Devine opened the first-ever MTV Movie & TV Awards with a hilarious spoof of Beauty And The Beast. He spoofed songs from the musical movie, with cameos from a number of stars, like Hailee Steinfeld, Rebel Wilson, Millie Bobby Brown, Josh Gad, and Chrissy Metz. The lyrics were changed to reference celebs, movies and television shows nominated for the awards. The show began with a celebration of gender fluidity as “gender-neutral nonbinary” performer Asia Kate Dillon (Billions) presented the show's first gender-neutral acting award to Beauty and the Beast'sEmma Watson. Presenting the award, which Dillon called, "the first acting award ever that celebrates performance free of any gender distinctions," Dillon said, "Tonight we celebrate portrayals of the human experience, because the only distinction we should be making when it comes to awards is between each outstanding performance."
