ECOT Ordered to Repay State $60-million

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WTVN)--The Ohio Supreme Court has denied a request for an emergency injunction by the Electronic Classroom of Tomorrow, or ECOT, to try and prevent it from repaying the state of Ohio $60,000,000.

The Ohio Department of Education ordered the money to be repaid regarding discrepancies in its attendance data from the 2015-16 school year.

The ruling means the state can deduct $2.5M per month from ECOT's state aid payment, beginning on Thursday.

Officials at ECOT had said repaying all of the money would put them out of business. The agency had also recently gone through hundreds of layoffs in an effort to begin repayment efforts.

There is also a dispute over ECOT using state funds to pay for TV advertisements.
