"Save the Crew" effort gets City Hall help

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WTVN) -- Fans of the Columbus Crew showed up at Monday night's Columbus City Council meeting, hoping government leaders can lead the charge to keep the Crew from moving to Texas.

Crew owner Anthony Precourt says he'll pack up the team and head for Austin unless a stadium is built in downtown Columbus.

"We ask for your help and your support to save the Crew,” said Morgan Hughes.

Hughes helped organize Sunday's "Save the Crew" rally outside Columbus City Hall.

City Council President Zach Klein said Monday the council will back the administration in doing everything possible to "save such an important sports franchise."

Meanwhile, Columbus Business First reports that if Precourt does move the soccer team to Austin, he'll be on the hook for Mapfre Stadium's lease until June 2023.
