COLUMBUS, Ohio (WTVN)--A Franklin County grand jury has returned an indictment that includes the possibility of the death penalty against Quentin Lamar Smith, the man accused of killing two Westerville Police officers in the line of duty.
Officers Eric Joering and Anthony Morelli were gunned down while responding to a 9-1-1 hangup call at Smith's home on Crosswind Drive on February 10th. Smith was also wounded in the incident when the officers returned fire.
The indictment includes six counts in all. Smith has a previous criminal record, and was not allowed to possess a firearm. The man who is accused of selling him the gun is now facing federal charges.
Franklin County Prosecutor Ron O'Brien is confident that Smith will get the death penalty, despite the recent sentence for Brian Golsby of life in prison without the possibility of parole for the murder of Reagan Tokes. Prosecutors sought the death penalty in that case.
O'Brien says the Morelli and Joering families are supporting seeking the death penalty for Smith.
