COLUMBUS, Ohio (WTVN)--It's one of the largest cities named after the explorer, but the city of Columbus will no longer observe Columbus Day.
City officials releasing a statement Thursday, saying instead they will observe the holiday on Veterans Day. Since that falls on a Sunday this year, it will be observed Monday, November 12th.
While Columbus Day remains a federal holiday, city offices will remain open, public services, like trash pick-up, will go on as scheduled, and parking enforcement will continue.
Many cities across the country have moved to re-name the holiday "Indigenous Peoples Day", since historians and critics point to Columbus's harsh treatment of the indigenous people of the "new world" when he landed in 1492.
The city of Cincinnati also recently decided to rename the holiday "Indigenous Peoples Day."
