Giraffe Born at the Columbus Zoo

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WTVN)--The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium are welcoming a new member of the family.

The zoo says Zuri, an 8-year-old Masai Giraffe, gave berth to a newborn calf early Tuesday morning.

The birth took place in a behind-the-scenes area of the "Heart of Africa" exhibit.

It's the first time in nearly 20 years that a giraffe has been born at the zoo.

Zuri was brought to the zoo in 2013 from The Wilds, and the calf's father, Enzi, has also been at the zoo since 2013.

The pairing of the two was part of a recommendation by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums' Species Survival Plan for giraffes.

Meanwhile, the zoo is also monitoring Cami, for the pending arrival of her calf.
