Columbus Police Chief Retires Today

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WTVN)--The Chief of Police in the City of Columbus is officially retiring today.

Kim Jacobs made the announcement late last year that she will end her career in law enforcement, spanning nearly 40 years.

Jacobs began in the department's patrol division back in 1979, eventually working her way up to Police Chief in 2012.

She is Columbus's first female police chief, and the city's first openly gay police Chief. Jacobs was educated at The Ohio State University, where she was also a member of the Women's Track team.

Among the many honors for Jacobs as she retires, City Council is creating a new fund for a law enforcement training program in her honor, as well as naming a new substation at Lazelle Woods after her.

Jacobs leaves the department this afternoon with a ceremonial walkout and procession.

Thomas Quinlan has been named Interim Police Chief, while Mayor Andrew Ginther searches for a new permanent Chief.
