COLUMBUS, Ohio (WTVN)--Ohio Governor Mike DeWine says cuts are already being made at the Ohio Department of Transportation, even as he proposes an increase in the gasoline tax.
DeWine telling 610-WTVN's Joel Riley that the cuts are targeted at middle management and duplicate positions, as the department faces a billion-dollar budget deficit, with bond payments causing much of the money to run out.
DeWine is proposing raising the gasoline tax by 18-cents a gallon, for a total of 46-cents a gallon. The last time the gas tax was raised in Ohio was 2005.
40-percent of the new revenue would go to local governments, for their road and bridge improvements.
