CPD Abolishes School Resource Officers Assigned to Columbus City Schools

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WTVN)--The Columbus Division of Police has abolished the assignments for the School Resource Officers in the Columbus City School district.

The move Monday affects 20 officers and two sergeants. Police Chief Thomas Quinlan says it was part of a 70-day notice required by the union of their status.

The CPD contract with the district expired on June 30th, with no new contract in place. Activists have been calling on the district to cut ties with CPD, over their handling of the protests downtown in recent weeks.

Quinlan says it's likely those officers will be reassigned, since there are other positions open within the police department.

CPD has a separate contract with Worthington City Schools. One officer assigned to Worthington Kilbourne High School will remain in that position.
