COLUMBUS, Ohio (WTVN)--Ohio's version of a "stand your ground" law takes effect Tuesday.
Governor Mike DeWine signed the legislation in January, which removes the "duty to retreat" before the use of deadly force is authorized in a confrontation.
The law extends it's use from an individual's car or home to, "if that person is in a place in which the person lawfully has the right to be."
If there's a question of legality in a shooting, the burden shifts to the prosecution to prove the shooting was not justified.
Gun rights advocates add that a person has to be in immediate fear of death or serious bodily harm, and have no other option but to use deadly force to survive, to be justified.
Critics say the measure leads to more gun violence.
