This week, the Men's Pizza Coalition head to the west side of Columbus and visit Iacono's on Cemetery Road. I can't remember who, but some dude on Facebook recommended this. So, dude: we are at your place!
We got there Saturday evening and were seated very quickly by a waitress who asked us for our drinks and kept them filled! Another bonus about this place: we wanted to get half/half on the pizza toppings so we could try more - and they let us do that. Score!
We ordered Hawaiian/BBQ, Meat Lovers/Pepperoni, and a "Green Beret." Neat thing about this place: they will donate $1 to the "Special Warrior Foundation" for each "Green Beret" pizza ordered. Really neat gesture and totally unique. Support the troops while eating fab pizza = double bonus, my friends!
As for the pizza itself - it was pretty good. There wasn't a really stellar standout. But, what really made the whole thing "pop" was the crust. This was probably the best crust that we've had so far. It was similar to a cracker crust but wasn't so dry. It had some "chew" to it but not too much. Just right. Well done. We'd say this was probably the main attraction.
Here's what the guys said:
- Jeff: "Great cracker crust. I can see why the Westsiders like Iacono's."
- Paul: "Nothing too extreme, but the cracker crust was duly noted."
- Nate: "They did the crust very well."
Our numerical takeaway:
- Atmosphere (out of 5): 4.0.
- Price (out of 5): 3.5.
- Taste (out of 10): 7.5.
- Service (out of 5): 4.0.
- Location (out of 5): 3.0.
BOTTOM LINE: 22.0/30 is the score for Iacono's. The atmosphere was interesting as it was between casual and slightly more "wear a collared shirt" type feel. Pizza was tasty, but the crust is what made the whole thing. Service was great, but the location can be a small trek for many Central Ohioans. Not a bad price, either!
Each week, the guys and I visit a local pizza joint. Our mission: to find the best pie in Columbus. If you have any suggestions, please let us know!
