Just say no
- Just say no to extended warranties.  They're pricey and often the cost of what you would pay to repair the product.

Bed Bath and Beyond Belief - Save all those Bed, Bath & Beyond coupons that come in the mail and newspapers.  Don't fret about the expiration date.  The store honors expired coupons.  And allows shoppers to use several coupons for different items made in the same purchase.

Romance experts and diamond retailers say the time between Thanksgiving and New Year's Eve is the peak engagement season. A new survey has some important info for guys who are thinking about popping the big question.

-- 94 percent of women respondents prefer a private, intimate proposal to a big public event, such as a stadium scoreboard proposal.

-- Women just want it to happen. When asked if a creative, imaginative proposal was important, 70 percent of the women polled said it didn't matter, as long as the proposal happens.

The survey of 2,288 adults was conducted by Harris Interactive for Blue Nile, an online diamond and jewelry retailer.

Consumers Grade Retailers on Customer Service

By George Anderson

A new study conducted by BIGresearch for the National Retail Federation and American Express, found that 85 percent of consumers shop more often and spend more at retailers that offer higher levels of customer service. Eighty-two percent said they are likely to recommend retailers with superior customer service to friends and family.

Nordstrom ranked first for delivering service to shoppers in the poll of more than 8,600 consumers. Also making consumers' top 10 list were Coldwater Creek, Marshall Field's, Kohl's, Boscov's, Recreational Equipment, Inc. (REI), JCPenney, Lane Bryant, Best Buy and Eddie Bauer.

The study also ranked retailers by channel. Those ranking highest in online and direct sales were L.L. Bean, Blair, Amazon.com, Overstock.com, and NewEgg.com.

Wal-Mart graded highest in the discount segment followed by Target, Kmart, Meijer and Costco.

Wegmans ranked number one in grocery with Trader Joe's, Whole Foods, Publix and Vons following.

Stretch to buy a house

Beware, homebuyers. Everyone around you is conspiring against your financial best interests.

Your real estate agent wants you to buy the most expensive house you can: the higher the price tag, the bigger her commission. Your lender is in cahoots, as well. Not only will a larger loan rack up more fees and interest, but also the lender knows you'll move heaven and earth to pay your mortgage even when you're falling behind on other bills.

Buying too much house could mean giving up other things you want: vacations, eating out, a college fund for your kids, a sufficient retirement kitty. Or it could mean ever more debt, as you borrow to try to maintain your lifestyle.

HOME PRICES FALL BY LARGEST AMOUNT IN 35 YEARS:

New home prices fell in September by 9.7 percent over September 2005, the biggest year-to-year decline since December 1970. The Commerce Department reported that the median price for a new home sold last month was $217,000, which is also the lowest median home price in two years. This news came one day after a report that found prices in the much bigger existing home sales market also fell in the year-over-year comparison, by about 2.5 percent, the largest decline going back nearly 40 years. Analysts are warning that there will be further declines, especially in formerly hot markets such as the Northeast coast and in Florida, California and Arizona.

A growing number of Americans are upset over rising health-care costs which they say are cutting into their ability to save.

The complaints don’t concern the quality of care, but rather the cost.  He notes that while the increase in health-care costs appears to be slowing, it’s still double the rate of increase in workers’ earning and inflation.
