It feels weird today... knowing that lots of football fans around the country are looking forward to league championship games and maybe even looking past that to bowl games and potential matchups. Here in Ohio, Buckeye fans are still celebrating a perfect 12-0 season for Coach Meyer and the team, but is it me, or is it ringing a little hollow right now? It's the rhythm of the season that's off... no championship game and no bowl game have me a little off today. I've certainly sparred with other fans about 'if the Buckeyes were eligible, they would beat (Notre Dame, Oregon, Florida, etc.)', but the conversation abruptly ends when they simply say ' but you guys aren't eligible'. They're right, but it is fun to dream... I mean that OSU / Michigan game was the capper in an epic season full of entertainment and frustration... moments of real triumph and a team coming together. It's clear to me that Coach Urban is a real coach. These players certainly had their struggles with teams OSU of old would have manhandled, but this team was 6-7 last year and was looking for some identity. The win over MSU was huge and Coach noted that he felt this team found something. Boy, was he right. We watched and marvelled at how the team could play so bad against inferior opponents and so well against the ranked teams they faced. I honestly think I cheered louder this season than any other... my son and I were fortunate enough to go to a game (thanks to Matt McCoy for the seats!) and it was so fun to see the game thru his 12 year old eyes. He was truly impressed with the number of people around and in the stadium game day. And despite his love for baseball (he was a blast when we went to see the Clippers at Huntington Park this year), he really aped it up when the Buckeyes scored TDs. It was fun for me to let go a little more than I would normally... I guess because he was right there to go along. Well, I was on campus, or should I say, in the campus area for the UofM game... my brother is in the hospital at OSU, so I came down, fought the traffic, and watched the game on the tenth floor of Doan Hall with him. It was a different experience than when I was in the 'Shoe with junior, but no less exciting to watch all the big plays of he first half and then the grind it out nature of the second half. I love that the Bucks gave me some special moments with my son and brother this year, and I'm so pleased for the team... seniors go out with a bang and a perfect season... Coach Meyer is 1-0 against the state up north... and we get to play 'what if' for the bowl season. OSU football was perfect this year in my eyes for more than just the 12-0 record. God bless Urban and let's go Bucks... can't wait for next year.
Of course, head to Matt's Sports Blog for more on the team and D Maetz has a bunch of qulaity pics of the the Bucks big finale... and feel free to play 'what if' with your buds. I don't care what anyone says... I think they could beat Notre Dame for sure.
