Four days of pure bliss for golf fans in central Ohio... the Memorial starts today! With all due repsect to the 120 players in the field, here are the groups I'm going to be paying attention to in rounds one and two.
7:20a today. Right out of the shoot comes Australia's Jason Day with Matt Jones and Nicolas Colsaerts. Day lives in Westerville and is a heck of a player. He took alot of last year off to welcome his first child, but he's back and swinging well.
7:31a today. Jordan Spieth with William McGirt and John Senden. Spieth is 19 years old and has been in the mix late on Sunday several times in the past couple months on Tour.
7:53a today. Johnson Wagner along with Jonathan Byrd and Stewart Cink. I love this group... Wagner has the best moustache on Tour and maybe one of the greats in all of sports... we men of facial hair must stick together. Jonathan Byrd once made a hole in one to win a playoff... awesome. And Stewart Cink has one of the great swings on the planet. Super group to follow.
8:15a today. Adam Scott Masters champ along with Ernie Els and Charl Schwartzel. Huge star power and the most classic group of swings together in the tournament, period.
8:26a today. Rory McIlroy along with Bubba Watson and Justin Rose. The international gold gods will be watching this group so why shouldn't you? Plus Bubba hits it long... I mean, even Hunter Mahan calls it Bubba long for a reason.
12:43 today. Zach Johnson along with Henrik Stenson and Robert Allenby. Zach was awesome last week, but never seems to get it down here. Maybe he'll surprise me.
1:16 today. Tiger Woods with Fred Couples and Keegan Bradley. Three awesome competitors and the World Number One. Get ahead of them and let the crowd wash by you if you want a good, close look.
Group I'm going to follow? 1:05p. Matt Kuchar, Webb Simpson, and Hunter Mahan. As a fan, I'm pulling for Mahan... I like him as a player and his commercials crack me up. Plus he's a Golf Boy which shows he's human and has a wild streak. Kuchar is playing so well right now and his smile is infectious. Simpson is due and may shake Jack's hand on Sunday afternoon.
Group I wouldn't watch on a bet? 1:27p. Ted Potter Jr., Vijay Singh, and Trevor Immelman. Potter always looks like he smells a skunk, Singh is suing the Tour, and Immelman just doesn't move the meter. I predict you'll be able to hear crickets around this group... or maybe roars from the Woods/Couples/Bradley group right infront of them.
