In today's world of social media, it doesn't take long for a semi innocent comment to make the bulletin board. Michigan quarterback Devin Gardner found that out Monday. Gardner was a guest on The Huge Show on WBBL-FM in Grand Rapids. He was asked by host Bill Simonson if Michigan was "a championship caliber team that can beat Ohio State."
"This is definitely a championship caliber football team that will win in the Big House against Ohio State," Gardner said. "We don't feel like we're inferior to anyone in the country."
When I read Gardner's words on Twitter and in articles I thought it was a rather brazen comment...but then I heard the interview. Gardner's bulletin board remark came eight minutes into a 12 minute interview and quite honestly, sounds very innoncent. It was a guy answering a question. The "will win" part of it might raise an eyebrow but what's the kid supposed to say?
It became a big deal, with ESPN.com, CBS.com, the Sporting News, etc. picking up the quote and running with it--and it probably wasn't the best choice of words by Gardner--but the way he said it didn't sound as bad as it looks in print.
Here's the audio of the question and answer---you can judge for yourself.
