Rutledge Sentenced for CPD Officer's Death

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WTVN)--The man convicted of killing Columbus Police SWAT Officer Steven M. Smith has been formally sentenced to life in prison, without the chance of parole, plus 66 years for the crime.

Lincoln Rutledge gave no response in court today, when asked by Franklin County Judge Mark Serrott, with the judge expressing disappointment at that reaction.

The jury that convicted Rutledge deadlocked on the death penalty, leading to the life sentence.

Officer Smith's daughter-in-law, Sydney Smith, was the only member of the family to address the court during sentencing. She pointed out the impact "Mike's" death had on the family.

Officer Smith was shot and killed during a SWAT standoff at a home in Clintonville in April of 2016.
