COLUMBUS, Ohio (WTVN)--Ohio Governor Mike DeWine is introducing a system for local municipalities and law enforcement agencies to easily enter violent crimes and civil protection orders into statewide and national databases, which deal with background checks for gun purchases.
DeWine unveiled a list of Tier I offenses that will be required to be entered into the system, including murder, sexual assault, pandering sexually-oriented material involving a minor, and kidnapping, among other offenses.
DeWine says while serving as Ohio Attorney General he found that only a fraction of offenses that were required to be entered into the databases were actually submitted.
The effort to organize the program will be led by Ohio Lieutenant-Governor Jon Husted. He says it will include digitizing the records that are only on paper.
It's all a part of the Governor's response to the mass shooting in Dayton on August 4th, that left nine people dead, and 26 others injured.
The plan still needs approval from the Ohio General Assembly.
