COLUMBUS, Ohio (WTVN)--New numbers from the Ohio Department of Job And Family Services show the deep impact of the shutdowns from the coronavirus outbreak on the Buckeye State.

On Friday, ODJFS reported the state's unemployment rate was at 16.8%, up from a revised March figure of 5.8%.

957,000 workers in Ohio were unemployed in April. That's up from 334,000 in March. Over 1.1-million Ohioans have for unemployment benefits for the first time since early-March.

There were just over 700,000 Ohioans who filed for unemployment benefits in 2018 and 2019 combined.

Shortly after the coronavirus pandemic started, ODJFS set up a system where unemployed Ohioans filing for benefits could do so on certain days of the week, so the system does not get overloaded.
