Columbus City Schools Suspends Athletics, Extracurricular Activities

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WTVN)--The Columbus City School District has suspended all interscholastic athletics and extracurricular activities to start the 2020-2021 school year.

In a statement released Thursday, the district says the suspension takes effect Friday, so schools can collect equipment needed from student-athletes and participants in other activities.

CCS Superintendent Dr. Talisa Dixon says, “Today’s decision is a difficult one, but throughout this pandemic, our top priority has been the health and safety of our students, their families, our staff, and the Columbus community.”

The district is still scheduled to begin classes all-online on September 8th, due to the coronavirus pandemic. The district had allowed practices and activities related to sports and other events since July 1st.

CCS says they will continue to monitor the situation, based on guidance from Columbus Public Health officials.
