DELAWARE, Ohio (WTVN)--After months of studying the idea, and taking feedback from residents, the Ohio Department of Transportation says a bypass for US 23, from I-270 to Waldo in Delaware County, is not happening.

ODOT says any project would cost billions of dollars to complete, with that stretch of 23 overcrowded with traffic, and hindered by dozens of traffic lights.

Some of the ideas for improvements included new connections to US 33 to the west, or to I-71 to the east.

The agency also took input from nearby residents, who did not want a new highway through their farm fields.

The shift in focus, according to ODOT, will be looking at improving some of the intersections along 23. Last year ODOT said that section of 23 was 30% over capacity and that the nearly 40 traffic signals add 10 minutes of travel time.
